Berlin in May? Theatertreffen!

Berlin is at its best in May: that’s when the renowned Berliner Theatertreffen showcases its selection of the ten most outstanding German-language productions of the past year. This time, the festival features three Swiss shows.

The Theatertreffen takes place from 3 to 20 May 2019 in different venues in Berlin. Its selection of the ten most outstanding shows are the centre of the festival. It is complemented by the «Stückemarkt», which offers a platform for new dramatic voices from all over the world. In addition, there will be debates, conferences and the International Forum where three young artists from Switzerland will take part.
The 2019 festival opens with a Swiss co-production: Simon Stone’s «Hotel Strindberg» by Theater Basel and Burgtheater, Vienna. In this year’s selection, Theater Basel actually appears twice, as it has also been invited with the play «Tartuffe oder das Schwein der Weisen», directed by Claudia Bauer. The third Swiss show among the ten jury selections is «Girl from the Fog Machine Factory» by Thom Luz and Bernetta Theaterproduktionen.

«Girl from the Fog Machine Factory» by Thom Luz, 6 & 7 May, Haus der Berliner Festspiele
With this contemporary story full of timeless magic and theatre enchantment, fog machine expert Thom Luz makes a plea against worldly proficiency while encapsulating the poise and elegance of beauty.

«Hotel Strindberg» by Theater Basel / Burgtheater Vienna, 3 & 5 May, Haus der Berliner Festspiele
Simon Stone makes voyeurs of his audience, looking into the rooms of a hotel where his exceptional actors transfer Strindberg’s cosmos into today’s world and translate it into a panorama of contemporary relationships.

«Tartuffe oder das Schwein der Weisen» by Theater Basel, 14 & 15 May, Haus der Berliner Festspiele
In his radical retelling of Molière’s tale, Peter Licht takes up central motifs of his work, taking aim at our present times in the process. Director Claudia Bauer and her cast translate his revealing criticism of language into lightning-quick comedy with colourful pop aesthetics.
