Celebrations and performance features in South America

There are plenty of exciting events ahead in South America, with a strong focus on Swiss performing arts.

Pro Helvetia will shortly be launching its cultural exchange programme «COINCIDENCIA – Swiss & South American Cultural Exchanges» with four events in four different cities in South America. Between 5 and 12 October, the opening will be celebrated with presentations and performances in Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Bogotá, in partnership with important arts festivals.
In this context, the co-operating festivals will present an impressive line-up of Swiss performing artists.

«COINCIDENCIA» will debut on 5 October in Santiago during the Bienal de Artes Mediales. For this festival as well as for FIBA, the Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires (where «COINCIDENCIA» opens on 10 October), Mats Staub has created «Diez Momentos en mi vida» («Ten moments of my life»).
This long-term interactive project is accompanied by an online collection and poster campaigns. The German version has fascinated audiences in many Swiss and German cities over the last years.

Additionally, FIBA will present two other Swiss productions: «Five easy pieces» by IIPM /Milo Rau and «Remote Buenos Aires» by Rimini Protokoll/Stefan Kaegi.
«Five easy pieces» is an intriguing reflection on the evil combined with a study of theatre and reality. The production has won several European awards.
«Remote Buenos Aires»  questions the role of artificial intelligence and big data in our society as well as human predictability. A group of 50 people set off on a tour through the city, guided by a synthetic voice via headphones. This artificial intelligence leads the group to perform an experiment on themselves.
FIBA runs from 5th to 21st October.

The two other openings of «COINCIDENCIA» will take place on 7 October at the Festival de Arte Contemporânea SESC in São Paulo and on 12 October in partnership with MapaTeatro-Laboratorio de Artistas in Bogotá. For these occasions, Ntando Cele, a Swiss artist with South African roots, created a new performance called «Black Milk».
Following these appearances, she will bring to four Brasilian cities her Swiss production «Black Off», which focuses on prejudices and stereotypes towards blacks: Rio de Janeiro (TEMPO, 15./16.10.), Recife (FETEAG, 18.10), Caruaru (FETEAG, 20.10.), Salvador de Bahia (FIAG, 24./25.10.).

And that’s not all. Swiss clown Gardi Hutter has been on tour through Argentina and Brazil since the end of September with her production «Juana La Valiente». Upcoming dates in October are: Buenos Aires (3.10.), Jundiaí (6./7.10.), Santos (8.10.) and São Paulo (9.,10.,11.10. and 4.11.), Ribeirão Preto (15.10.) and Goiana (17.10.). Tour schedule.
