Among the ten most remarkable productions of the past year chosen by the Theatertreffen jury are two from Switzerland:
In «Beute Frauen Krieg» by Schauspielhaus Zürich, Karin Henkel relates the story of the Trojan War from the point of view of the women suffering from it. The distinguished actors whisper, lament, analyze and expose the power-hungry men in «fake news» mode.
6 – 8 May in the Rathenau-Hallen
Ulriche Rasche has staged another great classic at Theater Basel: Georg Büchner’s «Woyzeck». The production is like a precisely timed machine in which sound, word and movement interlock like a well-lubricated gearbox. The hopeless course of Woyzeck’s life is recalled with all its sadness and despair.
17 – 18 May at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele
This year, the Swiss presence at the Berlin Theatertreffen goes beyond the jury selection. The Swiss-South African co-production «Pink Mon€y» can be seen in the international platform Shifting Perspectives, which reflects a broad spectrum of current social issues, aesthetic positions and pioneering trends. The Stückemarkt presents «Fresque» by the young company Old Masters. And last but not least, three young Swiss theatre artists will take part in the International Forum.
The performance party «Pink Mon€y» shows the economic importance of the currency of the same name. The purchasing power of the LGBTI community is appreciated by tourism and event providers. But the business of Pink Money is based on a global phenomenon of violence against people who love and live differently.
The characteristic of Old Masters’ «Fresque» lies in its exceptional interplay of form, aesthetics, narrative and play. The distorted rhythm of the piece allows an unusual experience of time by putting the viewer in a semi-hypnotic state. An intimate piece that is full of humour yet telling of love and death.
